RILICO – Temple of Light
A new temple has been discovered. Be one of the first to discover its secrets!
RILICO – Temple of Light is the result of my bachelor thesis and a concept for an interactive dark ride where you act together as a group. Use your voices to determine the colour of the light and lean in the right direction to steer the vehicle. In this attraction, it’s all about growing together as a team.
The story is based on the principle of Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and is full of symbols of temples, water and light, to give it more depth.
Ride concept & design

During the pre show, the guests get intorduced to the already explored two halls of the temple – the “hall of the dried up well” and the “hall of the extinguished prism”.
Also they get to know the futuristic and self-driving vehicles they will board to ride through the temple.
The vehicle is inspired by an ancient rowing boat and acts like a mentor during the ride and speaks to the guests in the individual scenes by giving them instructions on how to interact in the tasks.
It is able to tilt 7° in each direction and there are pressure sensors in the seats to detect weight shifting. The vehicle is also equipped with microphones to detect the guests tune.
After the futuristic and self-driving vehicles have been explained to the guests, they enter the station and – in groups of two vehicles – head straight for the temple.

Scene 2: Guests learn to control the vehicle using weight shifting.

Scene 3: Guests learn to influence the colour of crystals using the pitch of their voice.

After learning how to handle the two interactions, the guests are awaited by an escort vehicle that is inspired by the look of a lighthouse (scene 4).
It will show them the way to the first hall, which has already been explored, and asks the guests to follow to the second hall. But at that moment they will witness the magic of light, which will lead them astray. From now on they are on their own in the cave labyrinth of the temple.
The guests have to master the trials of light and find their way out together! In every challenges, they collect points in the form of energy.
Scene 5: In the “hall of the dried up well” guests will witness the magic of light that leads them astray into two elevators (scene 6).
The following scenes exist twice and are directly above each other.

Scene 7: The first mission is “the path of light” where guests lean forward and backward to keep the height of the light beam in the path.

Scene 8: The “bath of light” where guests lean left and right to position themselves into a coloured ray of light that comes from the ceiling that makes their vehicle glow.

Scene 9: The “gates of light” where guests have to get the right tune in order to match the vehicles colour to the ones of the gate.

Scene 10: The “cave of the crystal” where the two groups finally see each other again and get hit by a dangerous beam of light that no longer allows them to change the colour of their vehicle.

Scene 11: The “blocked paths” where guests have to work together with the other group and lean forwards, backwards, left and right in order to direct their light beam at the dangerous crystals in order to drain their energy.
Each group can only drain the energy from the crystals that have the same colour as their vehicle – sometimes they also have to work together.

Scene 12: At the “reunion” the two groups are finally back together. A red ray of light is shining at the wall above a closed gate. By weigh shifting inside the vehicle, both groups position their light beam at the red one to get the full power of the light.
A white wave of light illuminates the room, colours both vehicles in white and the gate opens.

Scene 13: The guests are finally back on track and find themselves in the “hall of the extinguished prism”. They use the energy they have gathered during their trials to light up the prism, which fills the hall with all the colours of the spectrum.
Shortly after the prism is losing its energy again, the escort vehicle comes into the hall and is relieved, as it thought the guests had been lost. It asks them to use the temple exit and make their way back to the research station.

Scene 14: At the exit of the temple the guests can see, how much energy they collected during their journey, before they leave the temple with the secret of the beauty of the prism.
Layout

The footprint of the attraction is 3000 sqm with dimensions of 60 m by 50 m.
The ride has length of approximately 7.5 minutes.
Basic branding

Branding for the type of attraction: “Tilt ‘n’ Tune” combines the two interactions of the attraction.
The tilt aspect is supported by the italic letters. The N with the two horizontal lines symbolises holding and changing a tune. Both representations give the brand a dynamic character, which is also reflected in the driving experience.

Branding for the dark ride “RILICO”.
Rilico stands for “river”, “light” and “cooperation” and represents the three main aspects of this attraction.
The name also sounds similar to the word “relic” and thus alludes to the temple. The descriptive subtitle and the figurative element in the form of a beam of light shining through a prism complete the branding that can also be used as a marquee.
